Netflix announced its latest documentary series, an eight-episode installment aptly titled Rapture. Set to air on March 30, each episode dives into the lives of a different rapper and season one includes names like Nas, Logic, T.I., 2 Chainz, Just Blaze, and Rapsody, along with Dave East, G-Eazy, and A Boogie Wit da Hoodie. According to Netflix, the eight episodes will examine the culture surrounding hip-hop and promises to give an inside look “into the artists’ lives with their families and friends, to sitting front row in the studio and grinding on tour, to experiencing the ecstatic power of moving the crowd.”
The streaming giant released a teaser trailer for the series, featuring brief clips from the rappers’ shows. “The definition of power is freedom,” says Nas right as the trailer comes to a close. “If you have power, you’re free.” Rapture is produced by New York culture brand Mass Appeal and directed and executive produced by Sacha Jenkins. Prior to working on the series, Jenkins directed the Mass Appeal-produced film on the 1992 L.A. riots, Burn, Motherf—cker, Burn.
“Way back, when hip-hop culture was in its gestational phase, the powerful message therein didn’t go much further than the five boroughs of New York City,” said Jenkins. “Today, rap music is the heartbeat of Mother Earth, and Netflix is the embodiment of the eyes from which she sees. It is a great honor for Mass Appeal to work with Netflix to produce our new series Rapture. We’ve been telling hip-hop stories since ’96, and as natives, we feel it is our duty to do the movement justice. Rapture is bangin’. Straight up.”
