The legendary Sharon Jones died earlier this month, November 18th at the age of 60 after a ferocious struggle against cancer. She was the frontwoman of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and a beloved, late-blooming fixture in the soul, funk and R&B communities. Her two-part struggle with pancreatic cancer was captured in the beautiful, aching documentary Miss Sharon Jones! that captures her unforgettable live performances.
Today, details for the two memorials to celebrate her life have been announced. The first will be held in Brooklyn on December 14, 2016 at 6 PM at the Brown Memorial Baptist Church, located at
484 Washington Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238. The second will be held in Augusta, Georgia on December 17, 2016 at 1 PM at the Imperial Theater, located at 749 Broad St., Augusta, GA 30901.
Friends and family of the singer are invited to come together to celebrate her life. In lieu of any gifts, Jones’ family has requested that make donations to one of the following: The Lustgarten Foundation, James Brown Family Foundation or Little Kids Rock.
After her death, the world mourned the loss of a brilliant, bold woman in a year already fraught with the death of other iconic musicians. Jones is survived by her her four siblings, seven nieces and three nephews.
