“Smooth,” the Santana and Rob Thomas joint that’s still played on the hour, every hour at CVS’ nationwide, is one of the most successful songs of all-time. The Supernatural single spent 12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 (tied for fourth-longest ever), 30 weeks in the top 10 (third-longest), and Billboard actually named it the second-best performing song ever, behind only “The Twist.” Not bad for a partnership between a guy who went seven years between albums and a mental patient.
“Smooth” also won three Grammys — Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year, narrowly besting “Livin’ la Vida Loca” — so it’s about damn time it’s getting the respect it deserves. Someone on Kickstarter is trying to raise $200,000 for SMOOTHcon 2016, a (hopefully annual) celebration of January Jones and Elisha Cuthbert’s favorite song.
Not only will “Smooth” play the entire time, but there will also be:
-SMOOTH – Santana feat. Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20-themed cosplay
-Vendors of the smoothest foods
(Smoothies, mashed potatoes, sorbet, variety of purees)
-Collages and/or projected slideshows of SMOOTH – Santana feat. Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 Facebook page member-submitted content
-Possible appearances by Carlos Santana of Santana and/or Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20
-Hologram Santana feat. hologram Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20
-Muñequitas (Via)
To date, the Kickstarter has raised $0. But if you don’t donate, that’d be a crying shame.
