While the debate may rage on about who had the song of the summer until it’s far in the rear-view mirror (we were happy to bestow that honor on Best Coast), it’s hard to argue with pure numbers. Sometimes, hard science is the only guiding light in our crazy world. By that metric, if we’re going to trust the data, it would appear that the mysterious Canadian crooner The Weeknd‘s win streak just keeps getting longer.
According to Spotify’s streams measured from June 1 to August 31, the No. 1 most listened to song in the United States was The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face,” but that’s not all. The No. 2 most listened to song was “The Hills” by The Weeknd. That’s a pretty definitive statement of what artist unequivocally owned the summer.
There are some other multiple honorees on the top 10 list, though. Fetty Wap appears twice with “Trap Queen” and “679,” Diplo, who is No. 1 on the Spotify Global Top 10 list, appears twice with his production on “Lean On” and “Where Are U Now,” and DJ Snake also appears twice with his contribution to “Lean On” and his remix of AlunaGeorge‘s 2013 hit “You Know You Like It.”
Either way, congratulations to The Weeknd! We’re sure you’re celebrating by not smiling while everyone has fun around you in a darkened club, or by seducing a woman in your castle in Toronto. You’ve earned it.
