Both are mysterious outsiders who seem to exist not of any time or place on this planet. Both are fascinated with existential dread. Both have superb facial hair. Tom Waits and Rust Cohle from HBO’s True Detective have a lot in common, to the point where I can’t hear Matthew McConaughey talk to his Beer Can Men without wishing Waits would write a song called “Talking to My Beer Can Men.” In fact, after rewatching every episode this season, I noticed how much of Cohle’s dialogue sounds like Waits’ lyrics, and vice versa, so I rounded up 10 lines that were grumbled by one of the two men/aliens/whatever.
