In 2011, Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs dropped by The Chris Gethard Show, a wonderfully weird live comedy show-turned-cable access program-turned-Fusion series, after the hashtag #diddygethard went viral. (There’s more to the story, which you can read about here.) It took five years, but Puff Daddy, who’s scheduled to perform in Brooklyn with his Bad Boy Family next month, returned to Gethard’s show, where he got into a phone fight with the show’s producer, Zach Galifianakis. If you want to see the guy who gave us “It’s All About the Benjamins” pretend to be a superhero named Blackman verbally spar with the star of The Hangover Part III, you’ve come to the right place.
The encounter is so bizarre that you might be tempted to think it’s staged. Gethard doesn’t want to say either way. He told Noisey, “You’ll watch it and think there are elements that clearly aren’t real, but I promise you there are also aspects of it that are far more real than I can explain.” It’s probably somewhere in the middle — an Andy Kaufman-esque piece of performance art, mixed with genuine, off-the-cuff moments. Either way, it’s magical, and I’m glad it exists. Also, every home should come equipped with a “Diddy door.”
