Facebook Launches Timeline Profiles As It Rakes In Cash Hand Over Foot

Nearly three months after first announcing the new feature that every user will have on their profile, Facebook today is launching Timeline.

Reports All Facebook:

A good million users of Facebook already had the advanced profile enabled when the site officially launched timeline today. Facebook pointed out that celebrities who have already begun constructing their timelines include Tim Tebow, Britney Spears, Lea Michele, Nicole Richie, and Rajon Rando.

Facebook users who are ready to take the plunge should start seeing “get timeline” notifications at the top of their screens…Once users upgrade, their timelines will be visible only to them for seven days, giving them time to review the information and photos they are sharing. That review period can be bypassed if users choose to do so, but if not, the new timelines become visible in seven days. We strongly recommend that you take full advantage of this private curation period.

My question is: Couldn’t they, after waiting all this time, waited until after the holidays to roll this out? Now this is just something else I’ll have to devote time to. I suppose I could finally just delete my damn profile, as I’ve been thinking about doing FOREVER.

Coincidentally, Gawker’s Ryan Tate reports today that Facebook is set to clear a billion dollars in profits for 2011.

The big picture is this: Facebook’s income is blowing up, and the company will likely come close to earning a full billion dollars in profit this year, more than double what it reportedly made a year ago and quadruple what it is believed to have made two years ago. There have been news reports elsewhere on prior Facebook financial periods; our numbers from the latest quarter show the money keeps pouring in.

Beyond that, Facebook’s billions in assets, including gobs of cash, constitute a war chest that can be used to buy other tech companies. That helps explain why the company raised $1.5 billion through Goldman Sachs in January, even though it was already very profitable by then. The company’s growing bank balance puts it in a position to initiate more, and more substantial, acquisitions
should it decide to do so.

I suppose Zuck now knows what’s REALLY cool.

Below is video of Facebook’s official rollout, which took place on the Today show, naturally, for the benefit of all the moms and grandmas on the site now.
