The first trailer for iZombie has risen. It stars Rose McIver (Masters of Sex, Once Upon A Time, and the Yellow Ranger for one season) as a character named Olivia — nicknamed “Liv”, pronounced like “live” because irony — who was derailed from her medical residency when she contracts the zombie contagion. Now she works in a morgue where she can eat the brains of John and Jane Doe corpses. She soon finds out, however, that she’s absorbing memories and abilities of these unidentified people, and she can use this to name them and catch their killers. Yes, they turned the quirky Vertigo comic into a police procedural.
The CW show comes from Veronica Mars‘ Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero, who were already cracking jokes at The CW’s expense during the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “We’re calling the show ZILFs,” joked Thomas during a Q&A after at least two people questioned how attractive the zombies are. Ruggiero flat-out said it’s a CW show and CW wants them to be attractive.
While most of the zombies use spray tan and hair dye to look alive, Liv opts out. Thomas explained bluntly, “The reason she does not spray tan or dye her hair to look like everyone else is because she will look great on our poster. The truth is, it’s for the CW subway poster.”
Wow. They should go totally meta and put that quote on the poster.
As for how many memories and abilities Liv will pick up from the brains she consumes, the writers initially argued over that. Will she know kung fu? Thomas gives the pragmatic answer, “At the end of the day, it was more fun to say ‘yes’ to those things.”
We’ll find out what crazy sh*t they said “yes” to when iZombie premieres on Tuesday, March 17th.
