It seems like the surprise Netflix hit Making A Murderer is bringing back the true crime documentary as a viable format for primetime television. There have been the dramatizations like The People vs. OJ Simpson and an upcoming Law & Order show on the Menendez brothers, but now CBS is trying to recreate the long form documentary magic that made Making A Murderer such a success. The case they plan to focus on? The murder of JonBenet Ramsey in The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey.
On Wednesday, CBS released the first trailer for the upcoming show, which promises to “reunite the original investigators of this unsolved murder and team them with new experts.” The show teases that tests performed with forensic science unavailable at the time will lead to new information on the case, and fresh theories on what happened to the 6-year-old JonBenet.
The possibility of correcting the record probably doesn’t make the series sound any better to the family and friends of the Ramseys, as many have found themselves on the wrong end of accusations as the case dragged on. But while the case has surely taken its toll and may feel a little played out due to the years of tabloid exploitation, this could be exactly what the child beauty pageant murder case needs: a comprehensive review that debunks all the noise that has surrounded the case and hones in on the actual facts.
