Most marriage proposal stories — no matter how romantic — are flat-out unremarkable and unmemorable to those not directly involved. This is not one of those stories.

Justin Harrel, 32, was wanted in two different Oklahoma counties for obtaining cash or merchandise by bogus check when an officer spotted him at Elk City’s “Christmas In The Park” celebration. The officer went to make the arrest, but Harrel shoved him away and asked him for some time because he was about to propose to his girlfriend:

“I advised Justin that he was under arrest and directed him to turn around and place his hands behind his back,” the officer wrote in his police report. “Justin said, ‘Steve, let’s talk about this. Give me five minutes.'”

When the officer took him into custody, Harrel explained that he was about to propose to his girlfriend. He asked if he could go ahead with the proposal.

The officer allowed Harrel to complete the marriage proposal, and Harrel’s girlfriend eventually said yes. Harrel then asked the officer to get the engagement ring from his coat pocket and give it to her.

The officer handed the ring to the girlfriend.

His engagement sealed, Harrel was then hauled away. Despite avoiding a resisting arrest charge — thanks to the incredibly accommodating nature of the officer that put him in cuffs — Harrel is still in jail on those pesky bogus check charges. His fiancee is understandably not thrilled, and maintains his innocence:;;playerWidth=650;playerHeight=400;isShowIcon=true;clipId=9645592;flvUri=;partnerclipid=;adTag=News;advertisingZone=;enableAds=true;landingPage=;islandingPageoverride=false;playerType=STANDARD_EMBEDDEDscript;controlsType=overlay
