J.J. Redick Somehow Ejected After Flip Saunders Tells Him, ‘Man, Shut The F*ck Up’

UPDATE:

Redick isn’t getting his money back. The NBA released their one of their first referee reports covering their review of the last two minutes of games, and they note in their assessment of Redick’s double technical, that it was the “CC” — correct call. They note both technicals are the correct call, too:

Redick (LAC) makes comments and gestures deemed contrary to the NBA’s “respect for the game” guidelines and is issued a second unsportsmanlike technical. All unsportsmanlike technicals are reviewed by Rod Thorn after games.

[…]

This unsportsmanlike technical foul is Redick’s (LAC) second and results in an ejection.

Redick might think he deserves his money back, but he continues to argue with the refs after picking up his first, and they weren’t out of line to assess him a second, and an automatic ejection. Well, at least according to the NBA’s findings. We’re not sure Clippers fans agree.

PREVIOUSLY:

This was so odd, we were as confused as Doc looks above. The whole sequence became even more baffling after the game ended and J.J. Redick got a chance to tell the Los Angeles Times what the hell caused his ejection after a double-technical with 1:06 remaining in last night’s ‘Wolves-Clippers slugfest.

Here’s what happened, as we saw it when looking at the tape. DeAndre Jordan was shooting a pair of three throws with 1:05 left in th game, and the T-Wolves trailing LA, 105-101. While this was happening, it appears Redick was asking the ref to get ‘Wolves coach Flip Saunders off the court. Flip responded with some curses. Here’s Redick on the whole thing:

Redick said he had asked referees to intervene after Saunders walked on the court during a dead ball.

“I’m not sure why he was out on the court, but he was yelling and stuff, so I said to the ref, ‘Man, get him off the court,'” Redick said. “And Flip turned to me and said, ‘Man, shut the . . . up.’ And he said it like three times. And I just walked to my spot and I got a double technical for that.

“So I shouldn’t have kept talking, but all I said to [referee] Josh [Tiven] was, ‘I’m going to get my money back’ and he threw me out for that. If I’m going to get thrown out, man, at least let me say some stuff.”

There’s no video of this back-and-forth between the refs, Redick and Saunders. We know Redick was on Flip’s side of the court when he came out on the floor after the foul was called.

It was just another odd twist in a game with a few of them.

Redick finished with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting and 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, and the hope the second technical is overturned and he really does get his “money back.”
