Harvey Weinstein vs. the MPAA

By / 11.19.10

The most laughable part of the documentary Overnight (which you should definitely check out if you haven’t seen) is when they imply that Harvey Weinstein might’ve been trying to have Troy Duffy killed.  But the fact that people would believe that about him shows you what kind of reputation Harvey Weinstein has.  And now he’s pissed at the MPAA, which is good news, because the MPAA are a bunch of corrupt A-holes.

In response to the ratings given to two of its upcoming films, The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that it has engaged a formidable legal team to challenge the NC-17 rating for BLUE VALENTINE and the R rating for THE KING’S SPEECH.

THE KING’S SPEECH drew an R rating due to its multiple occurrences of strong language, even though it is used in a non-aggressive, non-sexual, therapeutic way.

I consider all of my swearing to be therapeutic, as is my frequent yelling of ethnic slurs.  But why is that better than sexual use?  Do you have to be 18 before we can admit babies don’t come from the stork? (They’re caused by runoff from butt f*ckin’).  But don’t go away yet, we haven’t heard what Baby Goose thinks…

BLUE VALENTINE, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, in a film already acclaimed by critics, tells the honest and personal story of a troubled marriage, and yet apparently drew an NC-17 due to one scene, a sexually intimate sequence between a married couple trying to repair their broken relationship.

Gosling comments, “You have to question a cinematic culture which preaches artistic expression, and yet would support a decision that is clearly a product of a patriarchy-dominant society, which tries to control how women are depicted on screen. The MPAA is okay supporting scenes that portray women in scenarios of sexual torture and violence for entertainment purposes, but they are trying to force us to look away from a scene that shows a woman in a sexual scenario, which is both complicit and complex. It’s misogynistic in nature to try and control a woman’s sexual presentation of self. I consider this an issue that is bigger than this film.” [Deadline]

“Hey, girl.  When I saw you at the malt shop, I wanted to give you a big hug, but I support a woman’s right to choose.”

Anyway, I hope this is just the first step towards the MPAA’s eventual irrelevance, but they’re not the only problem.  They can rate a movie NC-17, but an NC-17 rating shouldn’t be de-facto censorship.  Why can’t theaters just show NC-17 movies?  No one’s tricking your dumb wiener kids into seeing Interracial Amputee Gangbang 7 when they paid for Lumpy the Walrus Goes to Church.  It’s ridiculous that people are so willing to just go along with the prudes in these matters when it’s so blatantly a freedom of choice issue.  And that’s why I plan to show up to this weekend’s screening of Megamind wearing a helmet of sparklers, a Four Loko in each hand, helicoptering my penis while singing the national anthem and changing every fifth word to “buttf*ck”.  Because this is America, god dammit, and it’s about time we took it back.
