Speaking at the press conference for “He’s Just Not That Into You” this morning, HitFix asked producer and star Drew Barrymore to comment on a Friday report that “Charlie’s Angels III” was in the works.
Barrymore replied, “”No, they said you should do a ‘Charlie’s Angels III’ and I was like, ‘No [expletive]. I would love to.'”
After the laughter died down, Barrymore continued, “Not yet on ‘Charlie’s Angels III.’ It’s still incubating in all of ours hearts.”
This contradicts comments the 33-year-old actress and her producing partner Nancy Juvonen gave Marc Malkin of E!Online yesterday.
Barrymore said she was “into it” and that while they are “hard movies to make” they are “fun.” Juvonen said the third installment of the lucrative franchise was “percolating up.”
The duo also revealed that ideas are still being kicked around, including the idea of a fourth angel. This would mirror the series’ TV origins where Cheryl Ladd joined the cast as the sister of the most iconic angel of all, Farrah Fawcett.
While “Full Throttle” brought a female villain, played by Demi Moore, into the mix, it appears the series will return to a male antagonist this time around. The original blockbuster featured Sam Rockwell and Crispin Glover as the bad guys.
It’s not surprising Columbia Pictures would consider a third case for Charlie’s sexy, smart and butt-kicking female detectives. The first movie grossed over $264 million in 2000 and the second flick, while more expensive to make, still brought in $259 million three years later.
Barrymore recently completed production on her directorial debut “Whip It!” and stars in the HBO film “Grey Gardens” premiering this spring.
