If Stacey Snider has her way, DreamWorks and new partner Walt Disney Pictures will be back in the Oscar game.  Disney already benefits by the awards success of sister division Miramax, but the latest label in their fold is already attempting to bring more prestige pictures to the Mouse House.  How so? Variety reports DreamWorks CEO and co-chair Stacey Snider has worked “feverishly” to acquire the life rights for a Martin Luther King, Jr. biopic.

The new project, the first to be authorized by the King estate and to use his famous speeches, will be produced by Steven Spielberg, but the filmmaker isn’t planning to direct the picture (at this time).  A script still needs to be written, but the fact the feuding family has agreed to bless this production is significant.

One of the United States’ most prominent historical figures, King was a Nobel Prize winning civil rights leader who worked to end racial segregation and discrimination.  He was assassinated in his Memphis hotel room in 1968 at the age of 39.

Suzanne de Pass and Madison Jones will produce the film alongside Spielberg.
