Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009.

With ABC’s 8 p.m. comedies drooping, CBS’ late-evening procedurals carried the network to a solid Wednesday night ratings win and “Jay Leno” gives “Eastwick” a scare.

Among adults 18-49, CBS and FOX tied with a  2.8 rating. ABC’s 2.3 rating was a solid third, with NBC taking fourth in the key demographic with a 2.0 rating. The CW finished fifth with a 1 rating.

Overall, CBS won more comfortably, averaging an estimated 10.8 million viewers and a 7 rating/12 share. ABC was a distant second with a 4.4/7, followed closely by NBC’s 4.7/8 and the 4.2/7 for FOX. The CW finished fifth with a 1.5/2.

In the 8 p.m. hour, NBC’s “Mercy” won overall with a 4.8/8, but only a 1.8 in the key 18-49 demo.  CBS’ “The New Adventures of Christine” and “Gary Unmarried” nipped ABC’s comedies with a 4.7/8 and 4.5/7 respectively.  FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance” was fourth overall with a 4.0/7, but clearly won the hour in the key demo with a 2.5 The CW’s “America’s Next Top Model” finished fifth with a solid 1.5/7.

CBS moved into first overall at 9 p.m. with a dominating 8.5/13 for “Criminal Minds.” The crime show even beat ABC’s hot comedies with a 3.4 in the 18-34 demo.  Instead, ABC’s “Modern Family” (5.3/8) and “Cougar Town” (5.0/8) averaged a 3.2 in the 18-49 demo. That’s down a bit from last week’s 3.7.  NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” also beat the comedies overall with a 5.4/9, but only a 2.6 in the key demo. FOX’s “Glee” tied ABC’s comedies with a 3.2 in the 18-49, building upon “So You Think” the hour before.  The CW aired a “Melrose Place” encore and finished fifth.

“CSI: NY” kept CBS in first in the 10 p.m. hour with a 7.8/14. In a surprise, “The Jay Leno” show beat ABC’s “Eastwick” with a 3.8/7 overall to the supernatural melodrama’s 3.5/6.  The show barely beat ol’ Jay with a 1.7 to 1.6 in the 18-49 demo. Scary indeed.
