Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, Reunited Wu-Tang Clan Will (Allegedly) Headline Bonnaroo

Last night, I was visiting my local watering hole with some acquaintances and…OK, I was at a bar getting drunk with some vagrants, when Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker’s “Free Fallin” came on the radio. We all got to talking about the song, and how it really brought together Jerry Maguire y’know, when someone mentioned the 2001 Clear Channel memorandum. Remember that? Among the many overreactions to a tragedy, this document, which listed 165 songs that 1,200+ Clear Channel radio stations couldn’t play after September 11, was the most overreaction-y. “Free Fallin” was listed, due to its vaguely 9/11-related title, as was, among others, “Sabotage” by Beastie Boys and “Crash into Me” by Dave Matthews Band. To be fair, that is a terrible song.

Anyway, that thing was dumb (is radio really radio if you don’t hear a Tom Petty song every five seconds?), and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, along with a reunited Wu-Tang Clan, are allegedly headlining Bonnaroo 2013.

We’re happy to bring you the as-yet-unannounced scoop: Bonnaroo‘s 2013 headliners will include Tom Petty and a re-united Wu-Tang Clan. Also, fresh off of their spot supporting Jack White and playing Virgin Free Fest, ZZ Top. No word on whether or not hologram-ish technologies will be employed for Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Or, for that matter, Tom Petty’s late guitarist, Howie Epstein. (Via)

If Petty and Wu-Tang perform a “Runnin’ Down a C.R.E.A.M.” mashup, I could die a happy man.
