Premiere: Great Grandpa Get Meta In The Fun Video For ‘Teen Challenge’

Great Grandpa’s 2017 album Plastic Cough was a chock full of nostalgia for the 90’s alt rock heyday, making for a fun and inspired listen. After seven months of nonstop touring in support of the album, the band has returned with a video for the single “Teen Challenge,” which depicts the band working to, well, make a video. The visual switches between clear, digital imagery that give a glimpse “behind the scenes” of a dysfunctional film crew and old-fashioned film shots that show — often in multiple cuts — what the crew is capturing.

“I had really wanted to do a project that contained multiple looks, and so we shot half of the video digitally, and the other half on Kodak Super 8 50T / 500T and Tri-X reversal film,” director Hugh Sherman Donkin in an email. “When I got the footage back I couldn’t stop watching it. There’s something about the home movie aesthetics of film that I love, it’s dirty, it’s light leaky, but that gives it such a genuine character.”

The hard work certainly paid off, resulting in a video that is equal parts ambitious and reflective, clearly showing a band having fun with their work. Check it out above.

Plastic Cough is out now on Double Double Whammy. Great Grandpa will be heading out on their latest string of tour dates at the end of January, this time with indie rock darlings Diet Cig. Check out all the upcoming shows below.
