Perfume Genius Drops The Wobbly, Uneasy ‘Go Ahead’ For When You Need People To Leave You Alone

When a musician goes on Twitter for a Q&A with fans, it’s usually to keep them at bay while a release date approaches (shout-out to Nicki Minaj’s infamous Q&As). But Perfume Genius had a pretty fruitful Twitter session with fans on Wednesday, dropping a song in the middle of the online convo, while answering some questions about new music.

Perfume Genius, a.k.a. Mike Hadreas, released “Go Ahead,” the second single off the upcoming No Shape, out May 5. Over a frantic, limping beat, Hadreas offers up double vocals that wobble into each other, creating tiny dissonances that inject a subliminal eeriness into the track. “Now watch me / Watch me walk on by / Honestly / Next one won’t be free,” Hadreas sings. The song, while sparse in the lyrics department, seems to be about telling someone else to “take a seat” while you thrive.

On Twitter, Hadreas answered questions like “Which celebrities inspired this album?” (A: “Chloe, Grace and Moretz”), “Could you describe the album in three words?” (A: “God, Devil, Me”), and “What’s your morning routine?” (A: “Open this eye, and then open the other one. And then I just start screaming.”).

“Go Ahead” follows up the more confident sounding “Slip Away,” which has Hadreas coming in strong with an epic explosion of a pop chorus, and drums that, unlike “Go Ahead,” follow a more conventional beat. You can listen to that baby below, and then check out the Perfume Genius tour dates, so you know what they’re heading to your town.
