Soccer Mommy Wrestles With Insecurity On The Airy Indie Rock Single ‘Cool’

Soccer Mommy (aka Sophie Allison) is readying her first album on Fat Possum, as Clean is set for release on March 2nd following years of cultivating a following on Bandcamp with her DIY recordings. She shared the groove-laden single “Your Dog” earlier this month, and now she’s back with a new taste of her upcoming record, titled “Cool,” a bright indie rock cut with a chorus as jubilant as it is rooted in insecurity.

Allison says of “Cool”:

“The song focuses on this other person who’s desirable and cool, and it shows how sometimes you can romanticize the idea of being different than you are. It comes from a place of insecurity and idealization, which is a feeling that hangs over a lot of the album.”

Allison also says that she felt a greater responsibility to herself while making this album than she had crafting her previous material:

“I’d never made a full album before, just EPs and random tracks thrown together. I wanted it to be a lot more cohesive than the rest of the stuff that came before. I wanted to make something that was a full piece of my life, that addressed similar themes and held together as a whole.”
