Over the weekend, famed music manager Jerry Heller passed away at the age of 75. And of all the folks who people were waiting on to speak on it, Ice Cube might have topped the list. What would he say about Heller more than 20 years after their falling out? The answer is that Cube took a reflective approach.

“It’s just ironic that I’m here tonight with MC Ren and DJ Yella,” Cube begins. “We’ve come a long way, and you know, the passing of Jerry Heller is a thing, that’s a part of life. You know, you come here to pass away. We’re all going to definitely reflect on our time with Jerry, our ups and our downs.”

The bad blood between Ice Cube vs. Jerry Heller is well-documented, as anyone on their rap history knows. For those in need of the recap, Cube left N.W.A. following Straight Outta Compton due to feeling like Heller and Eazy weren’t paying him fairly. The group took shots at Cube who fired back with “No Vaseline,” one of the most hard-hitting diss records in history. Cube took multiple shots at Heller: “Cause you let a jew break up my crew;” “get rid of that devil real simple/ Put a bullet in his temple.” The two never made up and have feuded on and off for years, whether it was Heller’s book, or over the 2016 feature film, Straight Outta Compton.

In fact, the issues that Jerry Heller had with the film are said to be why he passed away, according to his attorney. He attributes stress on the pending lawsuit played a big role.

Regardless how anybody felt about the man, Jerry Heller helped changed rap forever. Rest in peace.
