USA Network has ordered two new original comedies, one produced by Denis Leary and one from former Best Friends Forever team Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham, neither of which are titled Happy Endings and focus on a group of wise-cracking friends who get up to all sorts of delightful and zany shenanigans in the Chicago metropolitan area. I checked and everything. Turns out the one from Leary is called Sirens and is about three goofball Chicago EMTs, and the one from St. Clair and Parham gets a full blockquote because Jessica St. Clair’s work as Marissa Wompler on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast is groundbreaking and important.
Inspired by Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham’s real-life friendship, Playing House will focus on mother-to-be Maggie (Parham), who asks her single and career-driven best friend, Emma (St. Clair), to return from overseas for her baby shower, unaware of what’s in store. St. Clair and Parham, last seen on NBC’s short-lived Best Friends Forever, will also serve as executive producers. [TV Guide]
As for Happy Endings, here’s where we’re at: Yesterday someone on Reddit said he heard from his brother’s friend Steve — not Fat Steve, regular Steve — that the cab driver his mom had two days ago knew a guy who used to have the same podiatrist as a former assistant to the cousin of someone who works in the same building as the head of programming at USA and a deal to pick up the show was imminent, but even though Variey reports the two sides are “in negotiations,” Deadline says a deal seems unlikely at this point.
