If you’ve walked past a group of youngsters recently, you’ve probably seen them riding around on their two-wheeled carts, with a few almost running you over in the mall last Tuesday. And as frustrating as that can be, it’s not nearly as bad as the fact that said carts are being called “hoverboards.” The things have goddamn wheels, they don’t hover! Have people already forgotten about Back to the Future? Who’s responsible for this reckless naming?!?

The Daily Show‘s Jessica Williams shared these frustrations with the creators of these plastic rollers, and it turns out this situation gets weirder. The two men are currently in a patent lawsuit over who came up with the idea after watching McFly using one first. One of them even claimed he came up with the not-actually-hoverboards “as a kid, years ago” after watching Back to the Future, but “never stole anything,” while the other filed his patents five years ago, but is also getting sued by Segway, because these things are pretty much hands-free Segways.

None of this changes the fact that we still don’t have an actual hovering board. So, with the help of Doc Brown himself, Williams tried to ensure that future generations have this thing figured out.
