A Sad Anecdote Puts ‘The Walking Dead’ Cliffhanger Into Perspective

Whatever else fans of The Walking Dead want to say about the cliffhanger in the sixth-season finale, we all have to admit that it had its desired effect. Robert Kirkman and Scott Gimple wanted us to be talking about that cliffhanger between seasons six and seven, and that’s all that anyone has done when it concerns The Walking Dead. Who did Negan kill is easily one of the most talked-about topics of the last couple of months, and fans of the series have been so focused on it that no one is paying attention to the big changes that are coming in season seven.

Most fans, of course, found the cliffhanger frustrating. Robert Kirkman has been putting out fires for the last eight weeks, calmly responding to fans , and even apologizing to fans who believed it may have been a misstep.

This one account from Burt’s Business regarding the cliffhanger from Reddit, however, may put the entire ordeal into a new perspective.

I am thankful for the rumors of the cliffhanger.

I have been reading around just like everyone since the finale and there’s been a lot of speculation on the finale. One spoiler was posted that seemed to be the right one. A coworker and I always discussed TWD and obsessed over every detail.

I explained the spoiler that I saw to him and we had a blast just comparing it to the comics and how we would be okay if that was the right answer to the cliffhanger.

My buddy passed away last night and the conversation about the cliffhanger was the last conversation that we had. Thanks for the spoilers friends.

Rest well Don.

Didn’t see that coming.

It is a much needed reminder, however, that — at the end of the day — The Walking Dead is just a show. It’s a show that millions of people watch. Those viewers talk about their frustrations, the triumphs and missteps of the characters, the good and bad decisions the writers make, their favorite characters, their least favorite characters, and the moments that maybe mean the most to them.

Whatever else viewers want to say about the show, it brings a lot of people together, on social media, on websites, and even in real life, where we hash out our own theories and compare notes over coffee, in our cubicles, around kitchen tables, or in a local pub. In other words, for all its maddening turns and frustrating moments, The Walking Dead is ultimately a force for good.

RIP Don.
