“Saturday Night Live” head writer Seth Meyers has been announced as the host of the next Espy Awards, which will air live on July 14th, presumably on ESPN.
[Meyers] will oversee the 18th annual awards that honour the year’s top athletes and moments on July 14. The show will be televised live for the first time since 2003 from the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
Meyers says that if you asked anyone he played sports with as a kid, the only way he would appear at the ESPYs is as a host or presenter… Meyers follows in the footsteps of previous hosts Samuel L. Jackson, LeBron James and Jimmy Kimmel, and Justin Timberlake. [AP]
I’m a little unfair to Meyers; he’s better than I give him credit for. But I’d be more inclined to give him credit if the writing on “SNL” wasn’t so consistently lazy and uninspired.
Regardless of anyone’s feelings for Meyers, the thing that will suck most about the Espys is the Espys. What a ridiculous display of autofellating codswallop. Last time I checked, we already have a way to determine who gets shiny little trophies in sports: we have the athletes compete. If I wanted to see awards handed out to whoever got the most votes from a bunch of idiots, I’d follow college football.
