‘SNL’ Teases Dave Chappelle’s Highly Anticipated Return To Sketch Comedy

This Saturday, Lorne’s show will become Chappelle’s Show. Or, er, Chappelle’s show. (You see where we’re going with this.) The prospect of Dave Chappelle returning to the world of sketch is a fantasy for many a comedy dork and a brand new quarter-minute teaser confirms this highly anticipated bit of comedy cross-pollination is actually going to happen.

Characters are shelved in favor of a straightforward spot not too far off from a promo hyping your town’s new quarterback or a pop megastar’s stadium concert. Granted, we mainly get a lot of the back of Chappelle’s head, but with the limited amount of Chappelle we’ve had on television in the 2010s, we’ll take it. The minimalist approach is an intriguing and welcome way to go. It doesn’t unravel any mysteries about what’s in store, so there’s also a nice little bit of anticipation to the whole thing. Are we getting a pseudo Chappelle’s Show collcetion of sketches filtered in an SNL style or is Chappelle going to settle into the host slot and act like his return is no big deal? Provided the answer isn’t addressed during a Trump or Clinton speech tonight, we’ll get our answer on Saturday.

In addition to Chappelle serving as host, A Tribe Called Quest will be the musical guests. Phife Dawg’s passing will likely make for some bittersweet portions of the evening, but we’re confident two stellar performances are in store.
