Now Lazy High School Kids Have A Cool Movie To Watch Instead Of Reading “The Great Gatsby”

Baz Lurmann certainly knows how to get your attention. The Australian director’s take on The Great Gatsby is set to drop on Christmas Day, and with the first official trailer making rounds on the internet today, people are confused. Opening with The Throne’s “No Church In The Wild” and never looking back, Lurmann seems more than willing to apply his own unique brand of filmmaking to a book that so many of us hold near and dear. Those familiar with any of Lurmann’s work shouldn’t be surprised; between Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet, nothing about Lurmann’s work is subtle.

Even if you’re unfamiliar with Lurman’s previous movies, you can still appreciate what he’s doing here. Leonardo DiCcaprio was cast perfectly as Gatsby, and should endear to both traditionalists and younger audiences unfamiliar with the book. Considering the fast-paced lives of the characters, adding hip-hop and bright, acidic colors actually makes sense. And for those who missed out on 2011’s Drive, now’s your opportunity to get acquainted with Cary Mulligan.
