When you think music festivals, what do you think about? It’s probably some combination of epic live music performances, blistering heat, assorted drugs, and overpriced food and beverage. Apparently, according to a report by British publication Metro, you should also be thinking about what a great workout you’re getting.
A tech company called Withings has apparently calculated how much calories one burns when at a music festival. By taking into account all the dancing and walking/running from stage to stage, they estimate that your average festival attendee burns a whopping 9,000 calories and walks over 15 miles per day. Needless to say, that’s a lot. The Metro says that’s enough to burn of 56,439 cans of cider, which is a very British way to look at it. It means nothing in America, but it sure sounds like a lot.
Of course, these findings have to be taken with a grain of salt, because not every festival goer is going to be as active others and spend the eight hours per day dancing the report estimated. Not everybody is on ecstasy, after all. The piece also provides a rundown of all the big British festivals and how much the average person burns per day, but the only one likely to resonate with American audience is Glastonbury, which topped the charts with 3,400 calories burned per day while walking 5.1 miles per day. The next time you plan on getting into shape, maybe work Bonnaroo into your plans.
