‘Batman V Superman’: Affleck Talks Existential Batman, Snyder Talks Justice League

Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Zack Snyder recently granted a very long interview to USA Today regarding Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Not only did Snyder hint that we may be seeing most of the Justice League assemble in the same scene — “I love Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman, but having Flash and Aquaman and Cyborg and to see them all standing together, it’s a pretty dorky and cool experience for me.” — but Affleck also spoke about his portrayal of Bruce Wayne.

Affleck explained that playing the role comes down to how you portray Bruce Wayne, not Batman:

“You can’t really play Batman because Batman is different things to different people. We project our own things onto the mythology of what Batman is, and he has to be able to be projected upon. With Bruce Wayne, you have to bring something distinct and new and different.”

If we were terrible people, we would have truncated that quote as, “You can’t really play Batman” — Ben Affleck.

In keeping with Affleck’s previous description of an “embittered and cynical” Batman with a “void in his soul,” he also said Snyder didn’t want a young character still coming to terms with his parents’ murder, but rather “a guy who had been through that experience already for many years and was kind of burnt out and asking himself what the point of it all was and going through an existential crisis.”

Did somebody say Sad Batman?
