Shortly before finishing a month-long tour, Modest Mouse frontman and Portland resident Isaac Brock crashed his car in the city after nodding off at the wheel. The alt-rocker was apparently suffering from sleep deprivation. Portland police cited Brock for careless driving after concluding that he was not otherwise impaired or intoxicated. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries and it’s possible that there was one person who didn’t even notice his or her car had been hit.
According to OregonLive, Brock “hit the rear of a City of Portland Parks pick-up truck, which hit a Subaru, which hit another Subaru, which likely hit a fifth car that left the scene (perhaps not knowing it had been tapped).” He had failed to stop as he approached traffic stopped at Southeast Grand Avenue after crossing the Morrison Bridge.
As this article reminds us, Brock has a seemingly complicated relationship with the Oregon hotspot: A native of Issaquah, Washington (a suburb of Portland’s coolness rival Seattle) Brock generated headlines last summer when he insulted the city at a concert in Europe. Maybe it foreshadowed the accident because he used car trouble metaphors then, telling a crowd, “I didn’t mean to live in Portland. It was kind of an accident — I mean, the equivalent of my car breaking down there and me being like, well…I guess this is what I’m doing. I just can’t find a better alternate.”
