It’s just one of the Breaking Bad character cameos we want to see, but when asked if he’d reprise his role as Jesse Pinkman for Better Call Saul, Aaron Paul said he’d be more than happy to oblige. However, this being part of the AMC-Vince Gilligan universe, there is absolutely no information available on whether or not this is happening. We do know that Better Call Saul is a prequel series that already features one other Breaking Bad character, Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), and there are always little callbacks to the original series. So, what about Jesse Pinkman? Director Michelle MacLaren had some insight:
“Who knows what they’re gonna do, but it is a prequel, so [Paul] absolutely could,” MacLaren said. “I think it’s open to whoever Vince and Peter [Gould] decide to bring in. I would imagine that everyone who would ask would say yes, but I have no idea what they’re going to do with it.”
For his part, Paul is game:
“We always have fun having that discussion — Vince [Gilligan], myself, Peter [Gould], the writers. We just have no idea how that would happen. But hopefully one day.”
While not being involved at all in the show’s current production, he finds his feelings a little conflicted and weird:
“I love it,” he said. “It’s a little weird because it kind of looks like Breaking Bad. It has somewhat of a little bit different tone, but I know everyone involved, and I’m not involved in it at all and it’s a little weird, a little sad, but it’s great.”
Awwww, did that open up all of your healed Breaking Bad scars like it did to mine? What I find so fascinating about Better Call Saul delving into its original source material is how drastically different (or exactly the same) its characters are years before we met them the first time. It would be so amazing to see Jesse and Walter White before the events of Breaking Bad, just to watch people who are clueless as to how monumentally ruined their lives will become.
But even if there were plans, they will never tell us. And that’s why these are a fun pair of shows.
