We all know by now that Prometheus 2 is happening with Michael Fassbender set to return for the sequel. Once Ridley Scott puts these production plans in motion, that highly-anticipated Alien project by Neill Blomkamp will also finally get under way. At least that’s how things currently stand because it now looks like this second Prometheus movie that Scott is planning won’t be the last.
According to an interview with German website FilmFutter (via The Guardian) the director mapped out his plans to create a new franchise that will expand upon the story and characters presented in the original Prometheus movie before, one day, connecting them with the canon from the Alien film series.
“It won’t be in the next one,” said the British film-maker. “It will be in the one after this one or maybe even a fourth film before we get back into the Alien franchise.”
Aesthetically, Scott achieved a beautiful-looking film with Prometheus but the 2012 movie suffered in its plot holes and odd sense of story logic. Still, the introduction of the Engineers does act as an interesting starting point to push forward in Scott’s attempt at bringing another space saga to the big-screen. The director further explained his grand vision by stating, “I always thought of the Alien as kind of a piece of bacterial warfare. I always thought that that original ship, which I call the Croissant, was a battleship, holding these biomechanoid creatures that were all about destruction.”
If anything, Scott is not slowing down as he hits his “golden years.” Next week will find the premiere of his newest space movie The Martian and let’s not forget about that long-rumored Blade Runner sequel he plans to produce. It’s not too clear how his plans for these Prometheus movies might complicate things for Blomkamp’s Alien project. As well, if all goes according to plan, Scott would be in his mid 80s once his newest film saga is complete. If anything, you’ve got to give the man credit for his creative energy and enduring tenacity. Now excuse me as I try to find the gumption to get off the couch…
