Quavo Gives Us A Preview Of The Somber ‘Culture National Anthem’ From ‘Culture II’

During last year’s National Anthem fiasco, a petition emerged to redo the anthem entirely and have Migos’ Quavo jump on, because “he’s a feature on everything else, so why not?” Since a move like that is unlikely to be high on President Trump’s priority list (then again you never know…), the Atlanta trio decided to take the anthem-crafting into their own hands with the “Culture National Anthem,” a song from Culture II. The album is coming coming next week, and Quavo posted a preview of the song yesterday. Quavo said he’s actually lost sleep mixing the album, and we can hear his hard work at play on the murky, autotuned track.

Though the clip is relatively lo-fi, we hear the core of what sounds like a somber, reflective record. We hear Quavo harmonize, “my mama told me break out of the chains or you gon’ fall.” Given that the clip was presented with archival footage of Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights movement, the song will likely explore Migos’ place as young Black people in America. That kind of track would be a pleasant swerve from the brash bangers that the trio is known for, and evidence that they’re not resting on their laurels on Culture II.
