Cameron Diaz joins ‘Annie’ as cruel orphanage matron Miss Hannigan

Cameron Diaz is following up her caustic turn in “Bad Teacher” with an even nastier role.

The “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” star has signed on to play cruel orphanage matron Miss Hannigan in Sony’s forthcoming update of the Broadway musical “Annie,” according to Deadline. Sandra Bullock was previously in negotiations for the role but pulled out before a deal was made.

Quvenzhane Wallis is already on board to portray the iconic title character in the film, while Jamie Foxx is starring as Daddy Warbucks. “Easy A” helmer Will Gluck will direct for producers Will Smith and Jay-Z.

Diaz has a number of upcoming films on her slate, including Michael Hoffman’s long-delayed “Gambit” opposite Colin Firth as well as Ridley Scott’s star-studded “The Counselor” with Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender. A sequel to “Bad Teacher” (also the inspiration behind a forthcoming CBS sitcom starring Ari Graynor) is currently in development, though Diaz is not yet formally attached to star.

“Annie” is slated for release on Christmas Day 2014.
