Does The Chef Who Banned Bankers From His Restaurant Have The Right Idea?

We’ve all been there. Out and about in New York — or another big city that has a noted financial district — having a great time with some friends, carefree and innocent. Whether it’s at a restaurant, bar, play, concert, or another venue, it always seems as if right when the good times get rolling the bankers always show up. Well-dressed, loud, sometimes obnoxious bankers, always coming in packs. This isn’t to say all bankers who come in packs are inherently night-ruiners for everyone else in their direct vicinity, just that the chef in Paris who has decided to ban bankers from his restaurant might be on to something. As VICE’s Munchies vertical reports,

Alexandre Callet, who runs Les Ecuries de Richelieu in Paris, says he is forbidding financiers after numerous banks turned down his request for a €70,000 loan to open a second restaurant.

Instead of displaying the day’s menu specials, the blackboard outside his eatery now reads: “Dogs welcome, bankers banned (unless they pay an entry fee of €70,000).”

Callet, whose restaurant is in the Michelin guide and has hosted celebrities and movie stars, feels disrespected by bankers after a loan application in the amount of his proposed was denied. Although there is no word yet on whether Callet has had to enforce his new rule, at least we know that the next time we are in Paris, there is at least one safe haven from the suited up finance bros that roam city streets at night, determined to talk about the latest market stats loudly and within earshot.
