New York City may have been the first to slap people with a reckless-endangerment fine for drone-ing. Then, after a few Golden Gate incidences, San Francisco followed suit by cracking down on the quadcopter buzz. Meanwhile, Washington D.C. decided that the national security risk was all too real.
For a while there, it was the Wild West of drone-ing — now lawmakers are scrambling to change that.

Yesterday morning, the FAA set the wheels in motion to change Drone-ing as we know it. The laws are finally catching up, and – as of February 19 – all drones must be registered. There is a $5 registration fee, but the FAA is waiving that for the first 30 days of the registration period (starting December 21) – they’re working with us, so we need to work with them.

The FAA is excited to have some regulation over our skyward exploration, but it seems like they really want us to keep at it…safely.
“Make no mistake: Unmanned aircraft enthusiast are aviators, and with that title comes a great deal of responsibility,” said U.S. secretary of transportation Anthony Foxx. “Registration gives us an opportunity to work with these users to operate their unmanned aircraft safely. I’m excited to welcome these new aviators into the culture of safety and responsibility that defines American innovation.”
Not bad, FAA. Sounds very reasonable.

The FAA has set the minimum age of registered drone owners at 13 years old, and the penalties for failing to register include a fine of up to $27,500. Fines and jail time scale up dramatically for each unregistered offense.
