Michael Bay Is Making A Movie Entirely In Virtual Reality, And It’s The Most Michael Bay Thing Ever

Love him or hate him, you can’t say Michael Bay isn’t consistent. If you walk into something he’s involved in, you know you’re seeing elaborately choreographed action sequences, and possibly a robot’s testicles. And now, you’ll be able to run up to that robot and examine those giant steel spheres, because Michael Bay is getting into VR.

According to a press release from The Rogue Initiative, a VR company, Bay has signed on as “strategic advisor,” and there’s already a project seemingly in the works. ScreenRant found concept art that includes a vast, wrecked city and what appears to be an aircraft carrier on tank treads. We’re not entirely sure that wasn’t the pitch: “Let’s put an aircraft carrier on land!” We assume there will also be explosions.

It’s a bit surprising Bay hasn’t gotten into VR or video games at this point. Despite the mockery, Bay’s focus as a filmmaker has always been trying to put the audience squarely in the center of the action, which was the goal of his much-derided love of shaky-cam back in the day. VR lets him literally do that, and paired with his skill at setting up and pulling off action, it’ll be curious to see how he uses the new medium. Besides, come on, we all want to see that aircraft-carrier-tank thing in action.
