Broken Social Scene have hinted at a return for a while now. The Canadian collective surprise-dropped their first single in seven years, then performed it on late-night later that same day. But now it’s really official. The constantly shifting mega-group is dropping their first album since 2010’s Forgiveness Rock Record on July 7 via City Slang and Arts & Crafts Records.
As Feist already shared on Instagram several weeks ago, the new album Hug Of Thunder is an all-hands affair. The collective’s most-famous members will return from their various projects — Feist, Metric and Stars — to join in on the new release. Check out the artwork up top and take a look at the tracklist below:
1. “Sol Luna”
2. “Halfway Home”
3. “Protest Song”
4. “Skyline”
5. “Stay Happy Stay Happy Stay Happy Stay Happy”
6. “Vanity Pail Kids”
7. “Hug of Thunder”
8. “Towers and Masons”
9. “Victim Lover”
10. “Please Take Me With You”
11. “Gonna Get Better”
With track titles like “Stay Happy Stay Happy Stay Happy Stay Happy” and “Gonna Get Better” — and the general, unavoidable expansiveness of a band that occasionally clocks in around 40 members — there’s almost no doubt that the album will be a brighter outing than Feist’s sparse, great comeback Pleasure. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give “Century” a listen to grasp what kind of minds are working on this.
