The New England Patriots’ offense picked up a lot of yards but didn’t score much in the first quarter of the Super Bowl, picking up just three points on two red zone trips.

Early in the second quarter, New England once again found itself marching into Philadelphia territory thanks to a pass from Tom Brady to Brandin Cooks, but the Patriots’ receiver got turned around. While trying to get himself going back up field, he got blindsided by a massive hit from Malcolm Jenkins.

The hit wasn’t illegal despite the helmet-to-helmet contact as Cooks was a ball-carrier at that point and no longer a defenseless receiver. However, Cooks went down immediately and stayed down for some time before gingerly walking off of the field with the training staff. He was then taken to the locker room where he was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The loss of Cooks is huge for the Patriots, who are already shorthanded at wide receiver for the Super Bowl and now see one of Brady’s favorite targets go down. The Patriots’ offensive drive stalled out following Cooks’ departure, failing to get another first down after a failed trick play and failed fourth down effort. The Eagles would go down and score on the next drive to take a 15-3 lead.
