Eli Manning Fought Off Tears During Tom Coughlin’s Retirement Presser

It’s the end of an era for the New York Giants, as Tom Coughlin officially resigned his post as head coach on Tuesday. His press conference was an emotional one, for no one more than Eli Manning. At about the 40-second mark of the video above, Coughlin discussed Manning.

He can handle it all. He’s done it before, he’ll handle it again. He’s extremely bright, he’s extremely competitive, he’s… he’s what you want a son to be made out of, because what — I mean, he thinks he’s the reason. He’s not the reason that I’m — Eli, it’s not you. It’s not you. It’s us. We win, we lose together.

Eli, who’s only ever been coached by Coughlin, was deeply affected by the moment. It was very sweet, and sad, and will almost certainly be used as a GIF in a million smarmy tweets. Here, we’ll get you started:

As far as coaching vacancies go, the Giants’ one is a pretty great opening. The previous coach lasted twelve years, the fan base isn’t what you’d call long-suffering, they have a clear-cut and viable option at quarterback, and the organizational dysfunction tends to remain private. They’re essentially the anti-Browns. So, even if Eli Manning might treat the new guy like one does a substitute teacher without a lesson plan, he should be alright.
