The ‘Fun City Bowl’ is an annual charity football game held in Coney Island between New York City’s police department and its fire department. It’s supposed to be an event that brings the city’s first responders together for a competitive game to raise money for a good cause, but this year’s contest apparently got too competitive and turned out to be neither department’s finest hour.
After the cops wrapped up a decisive 29-13 win over the firefighters, the traditional postgame handshake line turned violent and bloody as both sides brawled on the field. Someone on the field happened to have a camera out to film the madness, and the scene was surprisingly intense. It took a while, but order was eventually restored – and both teams were sent back to their sidelines.
New York City’s police and fire departments not getting along isn’t anything new, either. Sure, they’re pretty good at working together to save lives when it matters, but it seems that when the competitive stakes are high, things tend to get nasty. The two sides also brawled during a charity hockey game at Nassau Coliseum back in 2014.
Plus, anybody who has watched Rescue Me has probably come to expect this kind of animosity by now.
