Nick Diaz Couldn’t Pass A Drug Test Until Three Days Before UFC 183

When word got out that Nick Diaz failed his post-fight drug test for twice the allowed amount of marijuana metabolites after UFC 183, I said that he fought high on weed. I meant it as a joke, but I didn’t realize how accurate I was. According to an interview with MMA Fighting, Nevada Athletic Commissioner Bob Bennett didn’t receive Nick’s clean drug test until January 28th, three days before UFC 183.

Nick’s head coach, Cesar Gracie said that Nick failed multiple drug tests that weren’t submitted to NAC in the weeks leading up to the event, but since NAC’s window for in-competition testing, which is the only thing marijuana is prohibited under, is twelve hours before and after the fight, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. All NAC needed was a clean test to re-license Diaz, who at that point, had failed two drug tests while competing in Nevada before.

Cesar Gracie believes that Nick remained clean, saying:

“My understanding was he passed the test, then he fought and then after he passed the test, he did not smoke. What we think happened is the exertion of the fight affected the test and that’s why he tested positive.”

While that flies in the face of logic, science, and every known law of the universe, Gracie’s next statement basically contradicted himself:

“It’s not a shocker. His DNA is THC, let’s face it. No one is surprised by that.”

Yeah, that makes way more sense. Now that Nick is probably retired, he can smoke to his heart’s content, which, if I understand things correctly, is ALL OF THE MARIJUANA ON THE PLANET.
