Comedy is a subjective thing, and when you’ve got nearly 40 years of episodes, and literally thousands of sketches from which to choose, coming up with the ten best Saturday Night Live sketches is a huge undertaking. Rolling Stone went even further than that, coming up with a list of the 50 Best Saturday Night Live sketches, complete with detailed write-ups on each sketch. Right or wrong, it’s an impressive list, marred only by the fact that it takes half an hour to get through the damn slide-show. But, if you ever want a primer on the history of Saturday Night Live, this list is a great place to start. If you just want a quick and dirty rundown of the ten best, well, this post may suit you better.

It’s hard to agree or disagree with any of the choices. I think number ten, “Word Association,” might be my number one, but I can’t quibble with their top choice.

10. Word Association (1975)

9. Behind the Music: Blue Oyster Cult (2000)

8. White Like Me (1984)

7. Choppin’ Broccoli (1986)

6. Stefon’s Halloween Tips (2012)

5. Point/Counterpoint (1978)

4. Wayne’s World: Madonna Fantasy (1994)

3. Dick in a Box (2006)

2. Buh-Weet Sings (1981)

1. Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker (1993)
