America’s Tenuous Grasp On State Abbreviations Is Put To The Test On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’

“When are we actually going to use this stuff?” That’s been the standard classroom battlecry for decades upon decades while learning about things like state capitals, long division and the water cycle. It’s a fair question. How will learning these educational staples really help your fourth grade dreams of becoming a space cowgirl or the guy who does the disemboweling effects in werewolf movies? Well, the reason why you should know these things is because you might get quizzed about ’em on Jimmy Kimmel Live and be clowned mercilessly by your buds over the results.

As Kimmel is wont to do, he busted out a person-on-the-street segment that quizzed passersby on state abbreviations. Tying into timely primary and caucus wheelings and dealings, HI, ID, MI and MS were the states on the test. (That’s Hawaii, Idaho, Michigan and Mississippi if you’d like a bluffer’s guide.) Some good sports took a valiant crack at sorting out these two-letter signifiers and the results went about as well as you might imagine. It turns out that even being from the state in question won’t guarantee a correct answer, and Idaho is about as well remembered by the American populace as The Geena Davis Show.

Give it a gander in the video we have nestled above (Minnesotans should be proud of how often they’re incorrectly name checked), and once you’re done, why not give the same quiz to a friend, co-worker or enemy? If they get all the answers right, scramble down an alleyway and try not to mention it was our suggestion.
