Charles Barkley has never been one to shy away from any topic, and in 2017 he’s branching out from beyond his post on TNT’s Inside the NBA to host a show called The Race Card, which will focus primarily on the issue of race in America. In the new trailer for the show, he calls race “the biggest problem of my adult life.”
The general aim of the show is admirable, as an attempt to debate one of the most crucial factors of divide in this country in ways a step removed from the 24-hour news cycle. As he puts it, “People never talk about race until something bad happens, and then all they do is yell and scream.”
Of course, the potential problem with the show is that Barkley has been known to shove his foot in his mouth fairly frequently, as well as having some regressive views on race. But if he truly can bring people from disparate groups to the table for something other than a cable news-style shouting match, it’ll be truly impressive.
