When it was first announced, the 3D Justin Bieber biopic was set to be directed by Davis Guggenheim of An Inconvenient Truth and It Might Get Loud. He seemed like the perfect choice; perhaps the perfectest. But when he dropped out 24 hours later, the project was left scrambling to find a new director, and time was of the essence, because how much longer can this kid possibly be a Twitter trending topic? At the time, I suggested Kenny Ortega or Adam Shankman or one of the other Disney channel pedos, but today it was announced that the director will be Jon Chu of Step and Step Up 2 tha Streets, which is probably for the best, as only someone who truly understands “the streets” could ever hope to tell the Justin Bieber story.
To the disingenuous press release!
“When I was approached about doing Justin’s film, I jumped at the opportunity to tell a story with honesty and heart. Most people don’t know that his is a true underdog story, and I hope to tell it in a compelling, genuine way, using all source materials available to convey his tale of becoming an icon for this digital age. This is the story of a new voice continuing the tradition of musicians that defined their generation,” said Director Jon M. Chu.
Yes, it’s a true underdog story, about the inspiring way in which Justin Bieber toiled at his craft for years and, against all odds, became a world-famous pop star before he hit puberty. I can’t wait to see this story told with honesty and heart, by which I mean, “in 3D.”
UPDATE: Now with even more boring video!
