CBS’ new drama series “Three Rivers” has added some Emmy-winning clout.

Alfre Woodard has joined the cast of the organ transplant drama, which premieres on CBS on Sunday, Oct. 4.

The network announced Wednesday (July 29) that Woodard will play Dr. Sophia Jordan, head of surgery at a Pittsburgh hospital. Of her character, CBS says “She has a vast amount of experience, training all around the world, which gives her an extremely diverse point-of-view.”

Woodard replaces Julia Ormond, who played the role in the original pilot for the Alex O’Loughlin-centric drama.

In addition to her Emmy-winning turns in “Hill Street Blues,” “LA Law,” “Miss Ever’s Boys” and “The Practice,” Woodard’s feature credits include “Passion Fish,” “Down in the Delta” and an Oscar nominated turn in “Cross Creek.”
