“I’m obviously not the type of artist who rushes anything. I’ve done, like, two records in the last eight years,” says Justin Timberlake.
At least he’s saying out loud what we’re all thinking: JT sure likes to take his time.
The pop star has lately been working with a slew of other huge artists, like Rihanna, Ciara and T.I., producing and songwriting. (It’s also worth noting, to this writer, that he’s gone out of his way to give props to our recent neo-soul crush Mayer Hawthorne.)
He recently told MTV that he’s writing some R&B tracks with Jamie Foxx, an unsurprising combination, though it’s the first time working together for the pair.
“It was kind of nice to write R&B again,” he said. “It was kind of refreshing, and I feel like we’re putting a new spin on it.”
But as for his own solo material, Timberlake mentioned the above quote, continuing, “So, until it kind of slaps me in the face, I’m going to tinker around with everything… I just believe that the process is what it’s really all about. And if you make the process [like] what I was able to have the luck of tapping into for the first two [albums], the end comes out the way it comes out.”
To translate: Justin Timberlake probably won’t have anything solo coming out soon, because he doesn’t know what sonic direction to go quite yet. Better keep spinning “FutureSex/LoveSounds.”
In the meantime, Timberlake has been getting love (and loss) for his big and small screen appearances, from the Emmys to “The Open Road.” There’s something he shares in common with Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard…
No word yet on how many tracks he’s contributed to Rihanna’s forthcoming album “Rated R,” announced this week, but we hope and pray there’s a duet in there.
