TV Ratings: NFL action helps CBS, NBC dominate Sunday

Fast National ratings for Sunday, December 27, 2009.
NBC had solid returns for its Sunday NFL game between the Cowboys and  Redskins, but CBS’ early-evening NFL overrun grabbed the night in overall viewership.
Among adults 18-49, NBC averaged an estimated 4.9 rating, topping the 3.1 rating for CBS. FOX’s 1.6 rating and the 1.5 rating for ABC followed. 
Overall, though, CBS averaged an estimated 14.95 million viewers to go with a 9.0 rating/15 share. NBC’s 7.9/13 was second, with an average of 13.54 million viewers. ABC finished third with a 3.8/6, while NBC’s 2.2/4 trailed.
CBS started the night in first with a 14.0/24 and a 6.7 demo rating for NFL overrun and the start of “60 Minutes.” NBC was second with “Football Night in America,” which topped the 2.9/5 for the start of “The Sound of Music” on ABC. FOX’s two new episodes of “Brothers” finished fourth with a 1.4/2.
The continuation of “60 Minutes” and the start of an encore of “Jesse Stone: Thin Ice” had an 8.8/14 for CBS in the 8 p.m. hour. NBC’s Sunday Night Football telecast had an 8.4/14 and won the hour in the demo with a 5.2 rating. ABC’s movie improved to a 3.8/6 in its second hour, beating FOX’s repeats of “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.”
NBC finally moved into first in the 9 p.m. hour with the Dallas/Washington showdown doing a 10.0/16 and a 6.2 rating in the demo. CBS’ telefilm was second. ABC’s “The Sound of Music” had a 4.3/7 for third. FOX’s “Family Guy” and “American Dad” were fourth overall, but second in the demo behind NBC.
The football game remained in first at 10 p.m. with a 9.3/16 and a 5.8 rating in the demo. CBS’ telefim and “Cold Case” had a 6.4/11 for second. That left ABC’s movie in third overall and second in the demo.
