Tina Fey and Steve Carell are two of the biggest comedy stars around, but 20th Century Fox is giving them a lot of help for their first movie together.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, recent Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson, rapper turned actor Common, “Gossip Girl’s” Leighton Meester and “Saturday Night Live’s” Kristen Wiig are crashing the romantic comedy “Date Night.” Along with the “Night at the Museum” franchise, Fox may have cornered the market on the “event comedy.”
Directed by Shawn Levy (surprise, “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”), “Date Night” follows a couple whose uneventful night on the town turns into much more than dinner and a flick after they are mistakenly identified as somebody else.
Wahlberg, who ventured back into comedy this past year with an appearance mocking himself on “SNL,” plays a a private security specialist who works in black ops and offers to help the couple. Franco, who had a career boost after starring in “The Pineapple Express” this past summer, is set to play a dim con man. Henson, who received acclaim for her performance in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” plays a good cop. Common joins Jimmi Simpson (aka Kyle the Intern on “The Late Show with David Letterman”) as two detectives on the couple’s trail. Meester appears as the couple’s baby-sitter and Wiig is on board as Fey’s best friend.
Wahlberg next headlining role is Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones.” Franco will segue from “Date Night” to David Gordon Green’s “Your Highness.” Common appears in “Terminator: Salvation” next month.
Production on “Date Night” starts this week in Los Angeles.
