About two hours after I initially listened to “I Can Be a Frog” it’s still in my head, like so many good children’s songs.
And that’s one of the better, more redeeming qualities of this new Flaming Lips track. I don’t think it was intended to be a children’s song, but it could have very well been hatched in a sandbox, bursting forth from a Fisher Price cassette player. Heck, it even features Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, who has been making her mark recently producing music for a kids’ movie (depending how you look at it).
Just to be clear though: this music video looks like it was made for about $5 and a pack of gum. The animation is actually very cute, and then there’s somebody’s pal in her bikini running around the same patch of backyard, pretending, smilingly, to be a variety of animals.
“I Can Be a Frog” will be featured on the Flaming Lips’ forthcoming double-disc effort “Embryonic,” due Oct. 13.
